Jose Miguel Iriberri Awarded in the Journalist Competition San Fermin 1992

"One tries to live the fiestas as best one can and as well as one is allowed. Working…….
Having to live the best carnival in the world with tango eyes and seeing the bulls from the top of a bell-tower. One is on the perimeter of the partying, on the borders of the programmed shows and spectacles……walking on a cheap tightrope at the edge of the action and the view of it all. One step forward, another step backwards, tied to the tightrope of that uncertain age when one begins to be a little old for one part of the program and a little too young for the other part".

Eating

Ham and tomatoes

These are slices of cured ham lightly fried in tomato sauce. The salt could cause you to knock back more drink than you expected. It is a typical plate to have after the morning bull-running. Or also at the afternoon bull-fight. As a sandwich it is excellent, but if you don't have particularly sharp teeth you end up pulling out all the ham with the first bite.

Then, while it hangs from your mouth you don't quite know what to do with it. It's not a good idea to stuff your mouth with all the ham at the same time - you could be chewing until kingdom come on it.

Like most places, the ham you get can be of a better or poorer quality. With the ham you can get in some places, you could make a ball of cord from it

Qué beber

Sangria

When a stranger arrives in town for Sanfermin for the first time, before he even exits the station or airport building he is ordering a bottle of sangría. It's like he's looking for his baptism water.

They believe that this is the national drink in Pamplona for Sanfermin, when, in fact, it is hardly ever drunk here, except at the bull-ring during Sanfermin. In any case, the mixture is basically made up of watered-down wine, lemon juice and sugar. Then depending on tastes or needs, with vodka, or rum, or with some peaches, cinnamon, or whatever.

Sanfermin Fauna

The Crass one

These enjoy a dubious reputation among the natives of the town. They are a bit like the base version of the normally beloved outsiders (foreigners) although more than one has been seen to have emerged from one of our own areas in the town.

It is believed that they mean well, they want to seem funny, but, alas, they just can’t manage to bring it off well, or they just can’t seem to understand what the Fiesta is all about. Their actions are usually characterized by a lack of respect for the old or for the children, or even for the urban facilities on the streets. They can also be seen around places like the bull-running where some subtlety is needed.

Along the route of the bull-running they are likely to do some idiotic thing under the glare of the cameras, in search of fame, without paying attention to the 650-kilo bull coming up behind them. San Fermin has made more than one protest to the authorities. He says his miracles can’t keep up with the demand when there are so many idiots around.
